Most conversations about aging skin focus on collagen. How do we make more of it? Is Ultherapy, radiofrequency or laser the best for stimulating it? Which serum boosts it?
But there is a more fundamental question that often goes unasked: Can Your Cell Still Afford to Respond?
Wishlist vs Available Budget
Every collagen-boosting skincare product and energy-based treatment is, in essence, an instruction to your cells.
Retinoids tell fibroblasts to produce collagen and encourage epidermal cells to renew more rapidly. Radiofrequency, ultrasound and other energy-based devices create controlled stimulation that demands fibroblasts to repair and regenerate collagen and elastin. Stem cell exosomes deliver biological signals that help coordinate cellular repair and healing.
Yet many people reach a point where they seem to be doing everything right — investing in quality skincare, undergoing treatments and following expert advice — only to find that the results are less impressive than their friends.
Perhaps the problem is not the instruction. Perhaps it is the cell’s ability to carry it out.
Skin Is High Maintenance
Scientists describe cellular aging through the framework of the 12 Hallmarks of Aging. These include genomic instability (DNA damage), impaired autophagy (inability to clear out and recycle damaged cell parts), chronic inflammation, altered intercellular communication, cellular senescence, etc.
One of the key hallmarks of aging is bioenergetic decline, which is the gradual loss of mitochondrial efficiency and metabolic function. Mitochondria are the power plants within our cells, generating the energy required for repair, renewal and regeneration.
This matters because skin is remarkably expensive to maintain. Fibroblasts require enormous amounts of energy to produce collagen. The skin also has to constantly renew its outer barrier, recycle damaged cellular components and repair DNA damage from daily environmental exposure, regulate inflammation and heal from injury. All of these processes draw from the same cellular energy account.
Imagine giving a large construction company excellent blueprints and clear instructions, but only half the budget needed to pay the architect, contractor, builders, carpenters and electricians. The plans are sound, but progress slows because there simply aren’t enough resources to complete the work. The same is true for our cells.
As mitochondrial function declines, so does the cell’s available energy budget. The result is what many people begin noticing in their thirties, becoming increasingly apparent through their forties and beyond: slower recovery, thinner skin, reduced resilience and a diminished response to treatments (even those that used to work beautifully).
Young People Can Become Energetically Depleted Too
Importantly, this isn’t simply a consequence of getting older. We are increasingly seeing impaired cellular energy production in younger individuals as well. A 35-year-old may, in some cases, have cells that behave biologically much older than their chronological age.
Poor gut health, chronic inflammation and micronutrient deficiencies (e.g. iron, magnesium and B vitamins) can all compromise mitochondrial energy production. Environmental pollutants, heavy metals and mold toxins may impair mitochondrial function and increase oxidative stress. Chronic stress, inadequate sleep and poor metabolic health can also impair the body’s ability to maintain these tiny cellular power plants. In other words, mitochondrial decline is influenced not only by age, but also by the cumulative burden of modern living.
Beyond Collagen Stimulation
From a skin longevity perspective, this changes how we think about treatment. Healthy aging is not simply about stimulating the skin harder. It is about ensuring the cell has the resources to respond to that stimulation.
